Notts knock champions out

Nottinghamshire knocked champions Sussex out of the Friends Provident t20 in a tight quarter-final at Trent Bridge on Monday night.

When the Outlaws' batsmen managed a total of just 141 for nine, it appeared Mike Yardy's side would be joining Hampshire in the last four at the Rose Bowl on August 14th.

Although Michael Yardy himself had earlier taken advantage of the bowling conditions - pace off the ball more effective throughout than pace on it - Samit Patel and Steve Mullaney proved even more effective as Notts won by 13 runs to make finals day for the second time.

Chris Nash and Luke Wright made a strong start to Sussex's chase but they soon faltered at the hands of Patel, Mullaney and Darren Pattinson (three for 17).

Wright mistimed a Pattinson delivery straight to Ryan Sidebottom at mid-on, while Nash - earlier dropped by Sidebottom at short fine-leg off Dirk Nannes - was then lbw trying to sweep Patel.

Nash's scalp was the first of three victims the home side claimed for just 14 runs. Yardy was then run out in a mix-up with Murray Goodwin before Ed Joyce was leg before sweeping at Graeme White.

Andrew Hodd and Goodwin battled to keep Sussex in it but the writing was on the wall when, first, the former drove Sidebottom to David Hussey at extra-cover, with Goodwin then caught by Alex Hales on the midwicket boundary.

Fast start

After Yardy had chosen to bowl first under cloudy skies, Ali Brown made a fast start for the Outlaws with two successive leg-side sixes off Chad Keegan.

But the seamer got his revenge immediately when, attempting another big hit, the ex-Surrey batsman was instead bowled.

Fellow opener Hales was already gone, edging on to off-stump as he attacked Arafat.

Yardy then used his left-arm spin to good effect and picked up two wickets with a typically miserly spell mid-innings, bowling both Patel and Mullaney as they looked to hit out.

Matt Wood top-scored with 36 before Goodwin's direct hit from point ran him out, while danger man Hussey departed after being caught in the deep off Nash's off-spin.

Nottinghamshire stood on 100 for six with five overs to go and that they made a decent total was entirely down to late hitting from Sidebottom and Chris Read.

Besides Yardy's contribution, Yasir Arafat finished with four for 34 but Sussex's bowlers ultimately failed in their attempt to stop the home tail from wagging.
